The History: The Siberian Chain Escape is based on the “Siberian Prison Transport Restraints” from the late nineteenth century. The restraints, used widely in the region, were thought escape proof. In 1902, the Imperial Police of Cologne “slanderously libeled Harry Houdini, stating his advertised tricks were swindles.” They claimed Houdini was unable to escape from genuine prisoner restraints.
The Provenance: Houdini sued the Imperial Police for defamation and demonstrated three escapes in front of judges in an official court of law. Legend has it, one of the escapes was the Siberian Chain Escape (it is sometimes called the Houdini Chain Escape for this reason). Houdini won the case and was issued a public apology by command of Kaiser Wilhelm II, Emperor of Germany, thrusting Houdini into global stardom.
